ABOUT US
The first Republican Party meeting took place on July 6, 1854 in Jackson, Michigan. Due to the huge crowd, the group chose to meet outdoors in an oak grove. It was under the oaks that the name “Republican” was chosen to designate the party of freedom that led the fight against slavery. At this convention, the new party adopted a platform and nominated candidates for office in Michigan. The Republicans won the 1854 elections and immediately became the majority party in Michigan.
The Republicans became a national party in 1856 when the famous explorer and military leader, John C. Fremont was nominated for president under the slogan “Free soil, free speech, free men, Fremont.” Four years later, Abraham Lincoln became president and led the nation to victory in the Civil War while freeing the slaves. Lincoln was the first Republican President of the United States.
