RESOLUTON  RE: ELECTORAL COLLEGE
WHEREAS, The Platform of the Republican National Committee includes a declaration of opposition to,
and urges the repeal of, all state legislation that attempts to implement the National Popular Vote
Interstate Compact; and
WHEREAS, Seventeen of the 20 Republicans in the Michigan State Senate and 40 of the 57 GOP lawmakers in the Michigan State House signed a letter that labeled the national popular vote proposal “a disastrous idea” that “should remain on the scrapheap of American history”; and
WHEREAS, The Michigan Republican State Committee adopted a Resolution against the National Popular Vote in 2011 that was unanimous but for one vote; and
WHEREAS, The framers of the Federal Constitution rigorously sought an effective compromise in the selection of the Chief Executive that preserved both the principles of a representative republic form of government AND the inherent Sovereignty of the States; and
WHEREAS, The National Popular Vote compact, as already adopted by several states contains no requirement that the participating states conduct their federal elections by the same set of rules; and
WHEREAS, the “National Popular Vote Interstate Compact” if implemented would make uncertain the election results for President and Vice-president since many constitutional scholars believe the state legislatures can decide how to cast their electoral votes after the November general election; and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Lapeer County Republican Executive committee opposes any attempt to undermine the rights of individual states electing our President through the Electoral College by way of the “National Popular Vote Interstate Compact;” and, further be it
RESOLVED, the Lapeer County Republican Executive Committee does fully endorse retaining the constitutionally approved and time-tested Electoral College by individual states method of awarding electoral votes to candidates to win the office of President United States of America; and be it further
RESOLVED, the Lapeer County Republican Executive Committee strongly encourages all Michigan
state legislators and Michigan voters to reject the “National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.”
As adopted by the Lapeer County Republican Executive Committee on January 20, 2022 with a vote of
